History of Physical Activity in Medicine. Dr Chernoviz in Brazil – III
Chernoviz imagined three categories of exercises:
1. Active exercises: are those in which our body moves
by itself, in whole or in part, but always being the only agent of movement. Examples
are: walking, dancing, hunting, swimming, fencing, rowing, and practicing
gymnastics.
2. Passive exercises: a very curious category. In
these exercises, it is not the contraction of one or many muscles that sets in
motion the other organs; they are concussions caused by an external force, that
determine the movements of all the viscera. Examples: riding in a carriage
(buggy, spider) or driving a boat.
3. Mixed exercises: these exercises are formed by
combinations of the two preceding groups. They are made up of concussions given
by an outside force and spontaneous efforts. For this reason, they must contain
the properties of the two groups. Depending on the predominant group, these
exercises will be more or less tonic, more or less stimulating. They can be combined
and serve as a transition from one another. An excellent example is horse back
riding.
