History of Physical Activity in Medicine – Dr Chernoviz in Brazil - II
Chernoviz stated that a sedentary lifestyle would lead to an exacerbation of sensitivity and an exaggeration of all impressions. It would also contribute to the origin of pulmonary tuberculosis.
He stated that the exercises prevented and cured
diseases, and the effects could vary according to the type, intensity and
duration of the practices. Moderate exercise would favor appetite, activate
digestion and induce restful sleep. When accompanied by some interest, activities
such as hunting, gardening or mechanical work, would have a great influence on
passions and thoughts, calming them. Therefore, the exercise would contribute
to diminish the harmful effects of the intellectual and moral excesses, being
able to recover the health of hysterical or melancholic people.
Excessive exercise would have negative consequences,
in addition to the painful feeling that, according to him, it would produce.
They would result in the breakdown of various functions and the facilitation of
several diseases.
