In 1830 he participated in a revolt against Russian rule in Poland and a year later, with the failure of the movement, he emigrated to France. He continued his studies at the Faculty of Medicine of Montpellier and obtained his diploma six years later.
Then he traveled to Brazil with the intention of
settling down and practicing his profession. In Rio de Janeiro, his diploma was
recognized. After analyzing the health situation in Brazil and the different
ways in which health care was developed in the country, Chernoviz chose to
become a medical editorialist.
With an
excellent use of the Portuguese language, he wrote, edited and published texts
both in technical language, aimed at health professionals - Medical Form or
Guide - as well as popular dissemination works, addressed to the educated
public - Dictionary of Popular Medicine and Accessory Sciences –
In 1855 he returned to France where he continued with
his publishing endeavors. It ended in Paris in 1881, with a consolidated
reputation.
In his writings, Chernoviz extensively publicized the
practice of physical activities as an instrument for the acquisition and
preservation of health. For him, the lack of exercise would have debilitating
effects on the physical and mental constitution.
